NAMES
Sometimes you can learn a lot from just the
name of a city. Included are the dates they were platted which
can help you decide which areas to begin looking for the oldest
coins.
- Warsaw: Platted in 1836 and named
after the capitol of Poland.
- Leesburg: Named for Levi Lee, who laid
out the town in 1835.
- Milford: Platted in 1836 and allegedly
named for a ford at a mill on Turkey Creek.
- North Webster: Settled in 1841 and
named for a prominent landowner, Malcolm Webster.
- Pierceton: Laid out in 1852 and named
for President Franklin Pierce. The post office was first
called Deeds Creek and was later changed to
Pierceton.
- Atwood: Settled in 1856 by John Wood
and allegedly named for him.
- Syracuse: Settled in 1834 and named
after Syracuse, New York.
- Etna Green: First called Camp Creek in
1849 its name wasnt changed until 1954. The
name is probably a parody of Gretna Green, a Scottish
town.
